SOIL TESTING EQUIPMENTS

MK 01010 - Proctor Compaction Test Apparatus, IS : 2720 (PART-7)

Soil compaction is a fundamental requirement for the construction of earth fill for dams, reservoirs, canal embankments, highways, railways and runways. The relationship between soil moisture content and compacted dry density is very useful for deciding construction specifications and quality control of compacted earth fill. While designing an earth or earth retaining structure, the strength and deformation behaviour of soil is evaluated by testing soil specimen compacted to the density as would be achieved during construction. The construction quality control is essentially to check the density of compacted soil achieved in the field, thereby checking its strength.

Compaction Test Apparatus, Manual IS:2720 (Part 7)-1987, IS:2720 (Part 8)-1990, IS:9198- 1979, IS:10074-1982, BS:1377 Following models of Manual Compaction Test Apparatus.

MK 01030 - RAPID MOISTURE METER - IS : 2720 (PART-II)

Using a speedy moisture meter, the moisture content of soils, sand and other fine-grained material can be obtained quickly with reasonable accuracy. The test technique is based on the fact that water will react with calcium carbide to form acetylene gas and the quantity of gas formed is directly proportional to the water present, leaving a surplus of the chemical used in the test. The quantity of acetylene gas produced is indicated on a built-in pressure gauge, which is calibrated in percentage of moisture on wet weight basis.

MK 01090 - LIQUID LIMIT APPARATUS - IS : 2720 (PART-V)

Casagrande method in mechanical form is known as liquid limit method and has been in use for soil mechanics for a number of decades. The liquid limit data of soils is useful to correlate mechanical properties of soil, such as compressibility and lower shear strength. Liquid limit is the water content at which soil passes from zero strength to an infinite strength, hence the true value of liquid limit cannot be determined. For determination purpose liquid limit is that water content at which a part of soil, cut by a groove of standard dimensions, will flow together for a distance of 1.25cm under an impact of 25 blows in a standard liquid limit apparatus. The soil at the water content has some strength which is about 0.17N/cm. sq. (17gms/sq.cm.) . At this water content soil just passes from liquid state to plastic state. It consists on a brass cup held on an adjustable bracket. The cup can be adjusted for a fall of 1 cm and can be raised an dropped on a rubber base of standard hardness by cam action. Complete with one Casagrande grooving tool, one ASTM grooving tool and a height gauge block.
  • fitted with a counter to register the number of blows.
  • fitted with a motor geared down to give approximately 120 rpm. Suitable for operation on 230 V A.C., Single Phase, 50 Cycles.

MK 01110 - CONE PENETROMETER SOIL - IS : 2720 (PART-IV)

For determining the liquid limit of soils. This is specially useful to obtain reliable and accurate results of those soil which have low plasticity index. The percentage moisture contents determined when cone with half angle of 15-30 minutes under a total sliding weight of 148 gm penetrates 25mm gives the liquid limit.

The test is based on the relationship between moisture content and the penetration of the cone into the soil sample. The moisture content at a given depth of penetration of the cone is taken as the liquid limit. As an inferential test, empirical correlations have been developed to assess the shear strength of soils at liquid limit.

MK 01050 - HIGH SPEED STIRRER - IS : 2720 (PART-IV)

This is for mechanical analysis and also other laboratory applications for stirring Speed approximately 4000 R.P.M. under load. A dispersion cup is supported on a rest on the stand of the stirrer and has a removable baffle. For operation on 230V A.C. supplied with dispersion cup or baffle cup.

MK 01120 - CONSOLIDATION APPARATUS - IS : 2720 (PART-XV)

Consolidation of clay deposits leads to distress in buildings such as cracks and failures. Consolidation is the reduction of volume of soil due to expulsion of water from its pore space caused by sustained loading. This phenomenon is time dependent. The one-dimensional consolidation test performed on an undisturbed sample of clay is useful for understanding the history of the soil deposit. The test results can be used for calculating the settlement of structures built on clayey soil.

The standard outfit comprises fixed ring type of consolidometer cell for testing specimens 60 mm dia x 20 mm thick, but the unit is so designed that specimens of varying sizes from 50 mm dia to 100 mm dia can also be tested. Besides, the same loading unit can be used with floating ring consolidometer cells, which can be supplied at extra cost. The standard outfit is supplied with a set of weights to give a total pressure of 10 kg/cm2 (besides a seating load of 0.05 kg/cm3 on the specimen), but an additional set of weights are required to reach the full capacity of 20 kg/cm2. The necessary accessories to perform the permeability test of the ‘Varying Head’ type can also be provided at extra cost. The outfit is also available as three-gang or six-gang in which three/six consolidometers are mounted on a single frame. The consolidation may be measured by the conventional dial gauges or using the transducers and electronic readout unit in Digital Models.

MK-S-155 : DIRECT SHEAR APPARATUS - IS : 2720 (PART-13)

The Direct Shear test is carried out with an apparatus consisting of a square or circular box divided into two halves. The specimen, contained in the box, is subjected to a constant normal load while an increasing horizontal force is applied to one of the sections of the shear box. This force causes a shear failure along the junction between the box sections. The shear force and the normal load are measured directly. The rate of strain is adjusted by the speed of the horizontal force applied. The loading unit has V-strips on which the shear box housing rests. The precalibrated load yoke with direct and lever system for applying normal load of 8 kg/cm2 capacity, fixtures, for proving ring brackets, for holding consolidation and strain dial gauges and lead screw for application of shear stress
